Species account |
A moderately small (c.2.5-3mm) noticeably hairy barkfly. Uncommon in Britain and Ireland. |
The species is strongly brachypterous (short winged). The wings are pointed, have few veins and a dark apex. The abdomen colour and pattern is very variable. |
The wings are easily detached and some specimens give the appearance of being apterous (no wings). Another useful distinguishing character is the banded tibia. |
The head has a distinctive pattern and the eyes are grey with a darker line running down the middle. |
