A moderately large (4.5-5.5mm) ‘picture-winged’ barkfly. Scarce in Britain and Ireland.
Forewing has six distinct spots in the apical cells. T. majus is often (but not always) distinguished from the similar T. sexpunctatum by the lack of a conspicuous patch near the centre of the discoidal cell.

Subgenital plate has a series of colourless stripes radiating from the apical lobe. Compare with similar species
Male
The apex of the abdomen has dark ‘horns’ either side of the hypandrium and dark areas on the epiproct above the hypandrium. Compare with similar species
