Ectopsocus axillarisEctopsocus axillaris Small (1-2mm) dark barkfly. Long-winged (macropterous) and short-winged (brachypterous) forms both commonly occur. Widespread in Britain and Ireland.
Ectopsocus axillaris Black/very dark brown head is distinctive.  No areola postica cell present. Forewings usually have a smoky colour and, in certain lights, often have a bronze sheen (unlike other Ectopsocus species). The dark marks around the edge of the wing vary significantly and are absent in some specimens.

The dark tips of the subgenital plate are strikingly different from those of other Ectopsocus species (which are almost colourless).

The males are much smaller than the females and have less broad abdomens.

The patch of tubercles above the clunial comb is much less prominent than other Ectopsocus species.
