A large, dark barkfly (6-7mm). Widespread throughout Britain. The forewings of males and females are different (see below). |

The apical segment of the maxillary palp is long (c.5 times as long as wide). The similarly large sized species, Psococerastis gibbosa, has a much shorter apical segment (c.2.5 times as long as wide).

Female
Forewing has an overall medium brown colour with colourless patches and darker brown areas as shown in the photograph. |
