Metylophorus nebulosus

Species account
Metylophorus nebulosus A large, dark barkfly (6-7mm). Widespread throughout Britain. The forewings of males and females are different (see below).
Metylophorus nebulosus The apical segment of the maxillary palp is long (c.5 times as long as wide). The similarly large sized species, Psococerastis gibbosa, has a much shorter apical segment (c.2.5 times as long as wide).

Forewing has an overall medium brown colour with colourless patches and darker brown areas as shown in the photograph.

Subgenital plate has an exceptionally long apical lobe.

Unlike the female, the male forewing is almost uniformly medium brown.

Hypandrium (at apex of abdomen) with crescent-shaped projection on the left-hand-side (best seen in side view).
