No photo of live animal |
A moderately small (c.3mm) dark barkfly. Scarce in Britain and Ireland. Both sexes can be macropterous (long-winged) though females are sometimes short-winged (brachypterous). |
One of the few species in this group with dark wings (also see Epicaecilius pilipennis). Long-winged specimens (macropterous) have two main colourless patches on the wings. |
Brachypterous (short-winged) specimens
have irregular dark patches on the wings and seta (short hairs). |
The head colour (both macropterous and brachypterous specimens) ranges from medium to dark brown and although there can be somewhat lighter areas on the vertex (between the eyes) there is never the two distinct pale patches characteristic of Epicaecilius pilipennis. |
Brachypterous specimens of this species look superficially similar to Peripsocus parvulus. They can be distinguished by the different shape of the subgenital plate and by having wings with seta (short hairs). P. parvulus has hairless wings. |
