Elipsocus pumilis

<<Back
Species account
Elipsocus pumilis A medium sized (c.3.5-4mm) barkfly. Common in Britain and Ireland.
Elipsocus pumilis The abdomen (both female and male) has a variable brown central area with the apex and base paler. As in the photograph, the coloured areas are often patchy. The abdomen colour is very similar to E. hyalinus and E. nuptialis and males of the latter species can only be separated if they are strongly associated with identified females (i.e. the population consists of a single species).
Elipsocus pumilis Female
The dark patches in the basal half of the forewing are characteristic of the females of all British Elipsocus species. This species is distinguished by having a less well defined patch over the areola postica cell (compared to E. abdominalis) and slightly cloudy wings.
Elipsocus pumilis Female
Pale crescents present on the head.
Elipsocus pumilis Female
The epiproct (apex of abdomen) is colourless except for two well-defined brown patches on the sides. The colourless gap between the patches is always wide (cf. E. moebiusi).
Compare with similar species
Elipsocus pumilis Male
The wing is largely colourless and lacks any distinguishing features from other Elipsocus species.
