Species account
Elipsocus hyalinus A medium sized (c.3-4mm) barkfly. Common in Britain and Ireland. Only females have been recorded.
Elipsocus hyalinus The abdomen has a variable brown central area with the apex and base paler. The colour of the central area usually varies from medium to dark brown. Specimens with completely colourless abdomens are occasionally found.
Elipsocus hyalinus Female
The dark patches in the basal half of the forewing are characteristic of the females of all British Elipsocus species. Only this species and E. nuptialis lack a dark patch over the areola postica cell.
Elipsocus hyalinus Elipsocus hyalinus Female
Elipsocus hyalinus can be distinguished from the otherwise similar E. nuptialis by not having clear pale crescents on the head. Specimens can occasionally have indistinct crescents (e.g. second photo) but they are never as pale as E. nuptialis.
Elipsocus hyalinus Female
The epiproct (apex of abdomen) does not have distinct patches.
  Male
No males of this species have been found.
