A small (females – c.1.5-2mm; males – c.2-2.5mm) barkfly. Females are wingless (apterous) while males are long winged (macropterous). Uncommon in Britain and Ireland. Most frequently recorded on tree trunks. |

The apterous females have very dark brown heads and brown banded abdomens. |

The subgenital plate consists of two touching diamond shapes. |

The forewings have a characteristic sinuous wing edge with long straight hairs along the edge in the sinuous area. |
