Species account |
No photo of live animal |
A medium large (c.5-5.5mm) barkfly. Rare in Britain. Unusually for Mesopsocus species both males and females have long wings (macropterous). |
As with all Mesopsocus species the wings are glabrous (i.e. completely hairless). M. laticeps can be distinguished from other Mesopsocus species by having veins Rs and M fused. |
Not all specimens of M. laticeps have veins Rs and M conspicuously fused. Like other Mesopsocus species M. laticeps can have the four vein portions meeting, or almost meeting, at a point. |
Female
The subgenital plate has an apical lobe that is rounded to a narrow point. |
Male
The phallosome has the end lobes strikingly long and without side lobes. |
