A moderately small (c.3mm) barkfly that is strongly associated with conifers/evergreens. Uncommon in Britain and Ireland. |
 |
Strongly bulbous postclypeus and yellowish body are characteristic features. Females have relatively large green eyes (blackish and very largein males). Antennae much shorter than forewing. |

E. obsoleta sometimes accompanies Valenzuela burmeisteri which similarly usually occurs on conifers/evergreens. E. obsoleta can be distinguished by having a narrow end to the pterostigma cell (sub-parallel) and the vein Cu2 without short hairs (seta). The areola postica cell is also often noticeably small. |
