Species account |
A moderately small (c.3mm) brown barkfly that is strongly associated with conifers/evergreens. Common in Britain and Ireland. |
The forewing colour varies from almost colourless to medium brown. A colourless line running along the edge of the pterostigma cell is similar to V. atricornis. The line is more noticeable in the dark forms of the species. |
V. burmeisteri is sometimes accompanied by Enderleinella obsoleta which similarly usually occurs on conifers/evergreens. V. burmeisteri can be distinguished by having a wide end to the pterostigma cell and the vein Cu2 with short hairs (seta). |
Unlike V. atricornis, the head is rather featureless. |
