A medium sized (c.3-3.5mm) barkfly. Uncommon in England and Wales. This species is unusual in being associated with low vegetation rather than trees. |

The forewing has a characteristic pale orange/tawny colour with a colourless line running along the edge of the pterostigma cell (see also V. burmeisteri). |

The species can be readily distinguished by the dark brown band running across the head. |
