Medium sized (c. 3-4mm) ‘picture-winged’ brown barkfly. Common throughout Britain. |

No areola postica. Forewing has prominent dark spot and apical cells almost uniformly pale brown. |

A rare aberrant form has pale areas in the middle of the apical cells which makes it look superficially like P. alboguttatus. |

Female
Subgenital plate (underside of abdomen) has characteristic shape with sides of the apical lobe dark.
