Species account |
Small (1-2mm) dark barkfly. Long-winged (macropterous) and short-winged (brachypterous) forms both commonly occur. Widespread in Britain and Ireland. |
Black/very dark brown head is distinctive. No areola postica cell present. Forewings usually have a smoky colour and, in certain lights, often have a bronze sheen (unlike other Ectopsocus species). The dark marks around the edge of the wing vary significantly and are absent in some specimens. |
Female
The dark tips of the subgenital plate are strikingly different from those of other Ectopsocus species (which are almost colourless).
